Dick’s Sporting Goods is debuting its experiential retail concept in New Jersey Sept. 19.
Located at Newport Centre in Jersey City, Dick’s House of Sport aims to combine traditional retail with interactive sports experiences, such as golf simulators, rock climbing walls, batting cages and turf fields.
The 85,000-square-foot store occupies space on the second level – near a traditional Dick’s Sporting Goods store – at the Simon Property Group-owned mall.
It takes over a storefront formerly occupied by Sears. The department store chain’s last remaining store in New Jersey closed for good a year-and-a-half ago.
In a video offering a sneak peek of Dick’s House of Sport, Newport Centre said, “From climbing walls to retail therapy – it’s not just shopping, it’s a whole vibe.”

Since establishing the format in 2021, the sporting goods retailer has launched more than 20 Dick’s House of Sport stores nationwide. By the end of 2027, Dick’s expects to have 75 to 100 locations across the U.S.
Within New Jersey, Dick’s House of Sports has sites planned for Cherry Hill Mall in Cherry Hill, Freehold Raceway Mall in Freehold and Rockaway Townsquare in Rockaway.

To celebrate its Jersey City grand opening, the chain has special offers, professional athlete appearances and giveaways planned from Sept. 19–21.
Festivities will include:
- Meet-and-greets with former New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez (Sept. 20, noon–1:30 p.m.) and New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns (Sept. 21, noon–1 p.m.)
- Free gift cards to the first 100 adults and free soccer balls to the first 100 kids in line Friday, Saturday and Sunday
- Free Calia Stanley 30-ounce water bottles to the first 300 guests in store Friday, Saturday and Sunday
Customers can also download a coupon to receive $10 off any in-store purchase of $50 or more. There is a limit of one coupon per shopper and the offer cannot be combined with any other promotions.
According to Dick’s, wristbands will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at store opening Sept. 20 for Rodriguez and at store opening Sept. 21 for Towns.
In other moves, Dick’s Sporting Goods announced Sept. 8 that it completed its $2.4 billion acquisition of Foot Locker. The combined company will now operate more than 3,200 stores plus e-commerce and digital businesses across 20 countries.
