The remarkable Powerball streak is over, and, in the end, no one from the Garden State claimed the nearly $1.8 billion pool.
As NJBIZ reported, the growing jackpot marked the second largest in U.S. lottery history — and created nationwide buzz. After 41 drawings, Saturday night’s 42nd attempt resulted in two winners, with tickets sold in Missouri and Texas.
The ticketholders will split the $1.787 billion jackpot, which came in after final ticket sales. Each ticket holder gets the choice of an $893.5 million annuity or lump sum payment of $410 million. Both prize options reflect totals before taxes.
“Congratulations to our newest Powerball jackpot winners and the Missouri Lottery and Texas Lottery for selling the winning tickets,” said Matt Strawn, chair, Powerball Product Group; and CEO, Iowa Lottery. “Each $2 ticket sold during this Powerball jackpot run gave players a chance at the prize, while also supporting vital public programs and services in their communities – and that’s worth celebrating!”
Garden State gamers
While no New Jerseyans secured the ultimate prize, there were still a number of local winners.
The New Jersey Lottery said players in 13 of the state’s 21 counties won big, including a Camden County player who won $1 million after purchasing a ticket at Xpress Food Mart in Woodlynne. Meanwhile, five players each won $100,000 and 11 players won $50,000 each.
Overall, 69 Garden State players won prizes of at least $50,000 during this remarkable Powerball run. That includes five $1 million winners, three who won $150,000 and 10 who won $100,000. The stretch recorded no jackpot winners from May 31 until Saturday night.
“Congratulations to the players in Texas and Missouri,” said New Jersey Lottery Director James Carey. “This has been an incredible run. All the while, I’ve been hearing from people in our state who are overjoyed at winning $1 million, $100,000, and $50,000 prizes.”
The Powerball jackpot now resets to $20 million.
