The Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Local 25, which represents sheet metal, air, rail, and transportation workers across North Jersey, announced its endorsement today of Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill (D-Montclair) in the special election for New Jersey’s 11th congressional district.
“Brendan Gill has always stood shoulder-to-shoulder with working people, and we’re proud to stand with him in this campaign,” SMART Local 25 President Joseph Demark said in a statement. “He understands the day-to-day realities our members face, and he has consistently championed policies that strengthen wages, protect benefits, and support safe, reliable transportation infrastructure. Brendan is exactly the kind of leader we need fighting for us in Congress.”
Gill, one of 13 candidates vying to succeed Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill, has been accruing labor support since he first launched his campaign last month; he also has endorsements from the the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 164, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers New Jersey State Legislative Board, the Communication Workers of America Local 1031, the Hotel & Gaming Trades Council, the New Jersey Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association, and the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union Local 108.
One of Gill’s opponents, former Rep. Tom Malinowski, has a SMART endorsement of his own, from the SMART Transportation Division.
