President Donald Trump just hit the lowest polling period of his second term, according to CNN data guru Harry Enten.
A number of recent polls have shown Trump’s approval rating plunging among Americans in the wake of the government shutdown and the ongoing scandal involving documents connected to the late disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. Enten said on Friday that Trump reached a new low in his polling numbers over a 10-day period.
“I would say this is probably the worst 10-day period for the President in the polls, his entire second term. The numbers are just atrocious,” Enten told CNN’s John Berman.
He pointed to a number of polls taken in November, noting that Trump’s best poll still places him at a -14 percentage point net approval rating.
“The best one of the group puts him at 14 points underwater. That’s the Marquette University Law School Poll, tied for the worse he’s ever had on that poll. Fox: 17 points underwater. Marist: 17 points underwater. The Reuters/Ipsos poll: 22 points underwater. And then taking the cake, the AP-NORC Poll: 26 points underwater,” Enten said.
“When your best poll has you still 14 points underwater, you know it’s truly bad, and it’s as bad as 26 points underwater. We’re talking about an average well, well, well underwater with the deep blue sea swimming with the fishes,” he added.
Enten then explained that Trump’s unpopularity among independent voters could be the driving force behind his low approval numbers. He said these low numbers could threaten the GOP majority in Congress.
“Look at this number. 43 points underwater with independents in the most recent average of these polls. When you have 43 points underwater with independents, you know you’re doing terribly. You can’t win with this,” he said.
“If this holds for next year’s midterm election, wave adios, amigos. Goodbye. See you later to that House Republican majority and that Senate Republican majority very much in danger as well,” he said.
Enten’s comments come weeks after Democrats swept closely watched races in New Jersey, Virginia and New York City. Many analysts claimed the Democrats won their elections due to their strong messages on affordability and bringing the cost of living down.
He said on Friday that Trump’s handling of the cost of living may also be impacting his polling numbers.
“Well, it has everything to do with inflation. It’s the cost of living, baby. That is the name of the game. You go back to January, he was three points above water. This was the reason why that voters gave him a second term. You look at this. Look at this. Now 34 points underwater,” Enten said. “My goodness gracious.”
