In a move that could boost her re-election chances in what is shaping up to be a hugely competitive Democratic primary in 2027, State Sen. Angela McKnight (D-Jersey City) has endorsed James Solomon for mayor of Jersey City in the December 2 runoff election.
McKnight, who won an open seat two years ago to replace Democrat Sandra Cunningham (D-Jersey City) in the 31st legislative district, is almost certain to face a primary challenge from Assemblyman-elect Jerry Walker (D-Jersey City) in June 2027.
“James understands that families need more than policies—they need access,” McKnight stated. “Whether it’s finding housing, navigating city services, or securing essential resources, he is dedicated to removing the roadblocks that make life harder for our communities. James has the compassion, experience, and commitment to ensure every Jersey City resident has a fair chance to thrive.”
Walker, a sitting county commissioner, was the top vote-getter in this year’s no-line Assembly primary: he ran 1,357 votes ahead of his running mate, incumbent William Sampson (D-Bayonne), and 1,589 votes in front of another incumbent who lost her bid for a second term, Barbara McCann Stamato (D-Jersey City).  Walker had the support of the Hudson County Democratic organization in that election.
As a candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s 10th district last year, Walker won the Hudson County portion of the district by a 45%-24% margin against now-Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-Newark).
A four-term assemblywoman who runs a local non-profit, McKnight was handpicked for the Senate in 2023 by Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop after it became clear that Cunningham, facing cognitive issues, would not run again.
McKnight endorsed Fulop for governor this year but was unable to help him win her district.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka won the 31st by a 36%-29% margin against Fulop, with Mikie Sherrill, now the governor-elect, finishing third with 19%.  Walker had backed Sherrill in the Democratic primary and now has a potentially strong ally as the titular leader of his party.
Solomon praised McKnight, saying she “embodies the spirit of service.”
“Her lifelong work caring for seniors, empowering families, and uplifting her community reflects the very best of Jersey City. I am honored to have her endorsement as we fight for a more affordable city for all,” he said. “My goal is to ensure every family can find a safe, comfortable, and affordable place to call home—and with Senator McKnight by our side, we’re going to make that a reality.”
The 31st district has included Bayonne and part of Jersey City since New Jersey adopted a 40-district map in 1973.  The new map, in effect for that election, added Kearny to the district. Republicans won four Hudson County Assembly seats in 1985, but Bayonne has not been represented in the legislature by a Republican for more than 103 years.
