A woman died in police lockup Sunday night in Trenton, officials have confirmed.
The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating, but said initial findings appear that the death was a suicide.
Trenton Police are required by the New Jersey Attorney General guidelines to report any in-custody deaths to the county prosecutor’s office, which then conducts an independent investigation.
The Office of the Attorney General Matthew Platkin said Tuesday that the county is investigating the death and will report its findings to the state’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability, which is run by the Attorney General.
The woman’s identity has not been publicly disclosed.
