There’s a new character on season 3 of “Tracker,” and fans think there’s something shady about her.
Melanie “Mel” Day, played by Cassady McClincy Zhang, was introduced during episode 3 of season 2, which aired on Sunday, Nov. 2. Reenie (Fiona Rene) hired Mel as her new assistant, and some fans were suspicious of Mel’s motives right away.
During her interview, Mel admitted she was interested in Reenie’s work with Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley), a professional “rewardist” who uses his tracking skills to assist law enforcement and private citizens in exchange for reward money.
Mel also revealed that she and Colter share an aversion to bureaucracy. The reason for her distrust in the system? Her mother’s tragic death.
“[My mom] was found [dead] in her car, shot in the parking lot of a rest stop, but they never found out who did it. So there were no answers, no justice,” Mel told Reenie. “I guess it just felt like the systems that were supposed to be there to support her were more interested in protecting themselves.”
One viewer took to Reddit last week to speculate that Mel’s fascination with Colter suggests she has ulterior motives working for Reenie.
“Im thinking [she could be] a daughter he never knew about,” the fan theorized.
Other viewers weighed in on the Reddit thread, guessing that Mel could be Colter’s long-lost sister or a stranger who holds some sort of grudge against him.
“She blames Colter for her mother’s death for some reason,” one person guessed.
“Colter failed to save someone close to her or she was sent by someone. Or, highest on the list right now, [Colter] or his brother [Russell Shaw] have or are suspected to have something to do with her mothers death. Which then may lead to revelations of what happened to their dad instead.”
Several other viewers guessed that Mel has something to do with The Process, the title of the “Tracker” season 3 premiere. During the episode, Colter and Russell (Jensen Ackles) learned about an underground criminal operation called The Process, which blackmails ordinary citizens into committing crimes.

The Process started out as a university experiment, but the professor Dr. Susana Tate (Lesley Fera) shut it down when some students began taking things too far. Colter and Russell seemingly put an end to The Process during episode 2, but the whole thing felt like it got wrapped up too quickly. Could that mean fans are right that Mel has something to do with it? Time will tell.
Season 3 marks a new era for the Shaw brothers. They reconciled during the season premiere after Colter told Russell what he learned during the shocking season 2 finale: that a man named Otto (Alex Fernandez) pushed their father off a cliff, killing him.
Colter previously thought that Russell killed their father, a belief their mother, Mary (Wendy Crewson), perpetuated.
“Tracker” airs on CBS on Sundays at 8:30 p.m. ET. Episodes are available to stream on Paramount+ the day after they air.
