A Newark man was sentenced to life in prison, plus 60 years, for a shooting on a crowded sidewalk that left one man dead and four others wounded.
Antuane Gregory, 46, was found guilty of first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree attempted murder, three counts of second-degree aggravated assault and weapons offenses after a jury trial in October 2025.
Prosecutors said Gregory started an argument with a crowd in the 400 block of Leslie Street on April 15, 2023.
“During the dispute, Gregory pulled out a handgun and opened fire on a group of five people,” Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II said in a statement Friday.
Corey Beasley, 43, of Newark, was struck in the back, right leg and twice in the left leg. He died a short time later at a nearby hospital.
Three others in the group sustained multiple gunshot wounds but survived. A fifth victim was shot at but not struck, Stephens said.
Gregory must serve 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
“This lengthy sentence delivers justice for the victim’s family and the four additional victims,” said Assistant Prosecutor Meredith Mona who tried the case with Assistant Prosecutor Monica Calderon.
“It also makes it clear that this kind of reckless, callous violence will not be tolerated in our communities,” Mona said.
