Roseland Mayor James Spango released the following statement on the death of former Governor Richard J. Codey:
“Governor Codey held many titles in his lifetime, Governor, Senator, Assemblyman, Coach, Husband, Father & Grandfather but the one title that was paramount to success in every role he served in was advocate. Governor Codey tirelessly advocated for those who could not advocate for themselves, his greatest accomplishment and a true measure of a public servant.
“His resolve to fight for what he felt was right and just regardless of any outside influence or pressure is a trait that embodies his spirit and passion to serve our communities.
“For a man that found levity in any situation to bring people together, it wouldn’t be a true tribute to Governor Codey without referencing his one-liners, they were classic.
“I was proud to serve him as his Mayor but privileged to be his friend.
“Thoughts and prayers to Mary Jo, Christopher, Kevin & Danielle, Brooke, Patrick & Paige from Dawn and I, may you have a lifetime filled with all the great times you shared.”
