Sussex County Clerk Jeff Parrott said today that he would not seek re-election to a fourth term as Sussex County Clerk.
County Commissioner Chris Carney is expected to enter the Republican primary to succeed Parrott.
A popular vote-getter, Parrott served as a High Point Regional High School Board of Education member, as a councilman and mayor of Wantage, and as a Sussex County Freeholder when he was elected county clerk in 2011 following the retirement of Erma Gormley. He was re-elected by wide margins in 2016 and 2021.
Democrats have not won a countywide race in Sussex County since 1999. The filing deadline to run in the June primary is March 23.
For the first time, the leadership of Sussex County government are all women: Jill Space is the county commissioner director and she is joined by women serving a county administrator, deputy administrator, county treasurer, and clerk of the Board of Commissioners.
