Former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason has some questions about the Dolphins’ decision to turn to Troy Aikman for help with their general manager search.
Aikman will act as an advisor for Miami throughout the process alongside Dan Marino, who serves as the team’s special advisor to owner Stephen Ross.
Speaking on WFAN’s “Boomer & Gio” Esiason shared his thoughts about that move.
“They’re hiring him as a consultant as opposed to Dan Marino, who is already there as a consultant,” Esiason said. “You think they’re going to collaborate together? I don’t think so. I think they like each other, but I would imagine if I’m Dan Marino, I’m like, ‘What are we doing? We’re bringing in Troy Aikman?’ It’d be one thing if Jerry Jones brought in Troy… It’d be like the Jets called up Phil [Simms].”
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Miami ownership wanted to bring in someone with an outside perspective who has strong relationships around the league. Aikman will bring that while Marino has the perspective of someone who has worked within the organization in various roles for years.
Per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, Dolphins executive Brandon Shore will also be involved in the search. Ross will have final say on any hiring decisions.
The Dolphins are looking for a new GM after parting ways with Chris Grier in October when the team was 2-7. Champ Kelly has been serving the role in the interim.
Grier had been with the Dolphins since 2000 and serving as general manager since 2016. During his tenure as GM, Miami had five winning seasons and three playoff appearances but still failed to win a playoff game. Their 25-year streak without a playoff win is the longest in the league.
