A 35-year-old man faces decades in prison after being convicted of killing his father in their home on Christmas Eve nearly two years ago.
A jury found Kyle Meyer, a former Boonton Township resident, guilty of murder and weapons offenses on Monday following a seven-day trial, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office said Tuesday.
Meyer will remain in the Morris County jail ahead of his sentencing, which is scheduled for Feb. 6.
The murder followed an argument between father and son at their Old Denville Road home around 1 p.m. on Dec. 24, 2023, according to an affidavit of probable cause.
Gregory Meyer, 61, was found in the basement with wounds to his left leg, head, fingers and hands, according to the court document. An axe and a battery-operated pole saw were found nearby.
Kyle Meyer was seen by his aunt leaving the home as she was returning, according to the court document. He was arrested about eight hours later in Paterson while returning to his parked car.
Kyle Meyer was released from state prison in 2022 after serving time for possessing a firearm without a permit.
He had been sentenced in 2021 to five years in state prison with one year of parole ineligibility, with credit for time served, according to court records.
