Months after a ceiling collapse forced its closure, the beloved Cranford Theater reopened its doors Nov. 25.
Following the closure this spring, owner Doreen Sayegh undertook a complete renovation of the historic, family-owned movie theater – with a pledge to reopen by Nov. 29, which marked the venue’s 99th birthday.
“The Theater has always been open on its birthday and I wasn’t going to miss this year,” said Sayegh.
The renovation includes new seats and carpet. Theatergoers will also return to a venue that can now accommodate a variety of events. Sayegh says she hopes to expand the theater’s offerings of concerts, talkbacks, film festivals and more.
Beyond reopening to the public before its birthday, the theater is back just in time for the holiday season.
“The holidays are my favorite time at the Theater,” said Sayegh. “The Theater becomes a gathering place for friends and family this time of year.”
Cranford DMC Board Chair Kristen Mider lauded Sayegh for her bravery and perseverance.
“Doreen has put in so much hard work the past few months to make sure the Theater would reopen,” said Mider. “It’s only right that at the time of the year we give thanks, Cranford Theater, the heart of Cranford, is open again.”
