Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill (D-Montclair) has earned another labor endorsement in his quest to win Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill’s House seat: the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 164.
“For over a decade, Brendan has proven himself a true ally to the labor community in Essex County,” IBEW 164 President Thomas Sullivan, who is also a county commissioner in Bergen County, said in a statement. “His dedication and action speak louder than words, and we are proud to support his ongoing efforts to protect and advance the rights of working families across New Jersey.”
IBEW Local 164 represents nearly 3,000 union workers: over 2,000 electricians in Bergen, Hudson, and Essex Counties, and over 700 telecommunications workers around the state.
Thirteen other Democrats are competing for the nomination in New Jersey’s 11th district, which will host a special election next year; the Democratic primary will arrive on February 5, and candidates have to file to run by this coming Monday, December 1.
Gill has secured by far the most endorsements of anyone in the race thus far, including from a number of unions: the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers New Jersey State Legislative Board, the Communication Workers of America Local 1031, the Hotel & Gaming Trades Council, the New Jersey Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association, and the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union Local 108.
