It will be a big Sports Sunday around the Colonial Valley Conference as the Allentown High girls’ soccer team plays for a Group II state title against Ramsey at 10 a.m. at Franklin High, then the Mercer County Soccer Hall of Fame/Glenn “Mooch” Myernick Senior Games cap the local season with a pair of games at Al Cowell Sr. Field in Hamilton’s Veterans Park.
The Mooch Senior Girls’ Game, which will unfortunately be missing the Redbirds, will kick off at noon with the Boys’ Game to follow at 2 p.m. Check-ins for each game will begin a half hour before the start time at the table set up between the soccer and baseball fields.
The events honor the memory of Myernick, who grew up playing soccer in Lawrence and went on to earn national and international fame, before dying suddenly 19 years ago. The Mooch Soccer Program, which gives inner-city kids in the Trenton area the opportunity to play the sport with help from high-profile coaches like Mike Van Wagner and Charlie Inverso, will be one of the event’s main supporters again this season.
This year, Bruce Angebranndt, one of the Mooch Senior Games’ key committee members who passed away suddenly this fall, will also be remembered. To memorialize both, this year’s teams will wear blue-and white jerseys for Angebranndt and red-and-white jerseys for Myernick.
With help from its sponsors: Mooch Soccer; the Mercer County Soccer Hall of Fame; NJM Insurance; RSword; Richard Fornaro of Fornaro & Francioso, Counselors at Law; Dino Spadaccini of the Spadaccini Law Firm; the Ancient Order of the Hibernians; Ciro Baldino and family of Conte’s Pizza; Tony Rosica & Greg Harvell of Keller Williams Premier Real Estate; Marsilio’s/Rossi’s Bar and Grill; Premier Key Abstract; plus the Central Jersey Youth Soccer Association, the Mooch Senior Games will again be free to the public.
The coaches for the teams will include members of the Mercer County Soccer Hall of Fame who donate their time for these matches, along with referees John Carmignani, Debbie Carr, William Feliciano, Shawn Gardiner, Mike Desloges, in hopes that all the players might enjoy one more fun day of soccer before their graduation.
