We still have more than a week to go before scores of turkeys will be roasting in ovens, but some forecasters are already making predictions about what type of weather conditions will be faced by Thanksgiving travelers.
AccuWeather is currently calling for a chance of rain showers in the New Jersey region next Wednesday — one of the busiest travel days of the season.
And the showers could continue through the morning on Thanksgiving Day.
But it’s not a lock. A big part of the forecast depends on the timing of a large storm system that’s expected to impact the southern and central sections of the country on Tuesday.
That storm system “could bring some rain and some areas of fog late in the day on Wednesday and into Thursday” in the New Jersey region, AccuWeather meteorologist Chad Merrill told NJ Advance Media.
It may be too early now to determine if the rain will affect the huge Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York or the big 6abc Dunkin Thanksgiving Parade in Philadelphia, Merrill said.
For Thanksgiving travelers, the storm system that’s looming next week could make a mess on some roads and airline flight schedules, AccuWeather long-range meteorologist Paul Pastelok said.
“There is the potential for travel delays related to rain, slick conditions and poor visibility from the Ohio Valley to the Northeast states from Wednesday to Wednesday night, but that depends on the track, strength and forward speed of the large storm system,” Pastelok said.
“The storm will be losing some of its intensity and moisture as it travels from the central states to the Northeast,” Pastelok added. “But given the travel volume, even a few hours of rain can create significant problems on the roads and runways from Washington, D.C., to Philadelphia, New York City and Boston.”
The National Weather Service hasn’t yet issued its forecast for next Wednesday or Thanksgiving Day. It typically does that five days in advance, when there’s a higher level of confidence in the long-range forecast.
