A 112-year-old historic estate in North Jersey has been heavily damaged in a fire.
The blaze was reported at 7:12 a.m. on Friday at the Ringling Manor in the Oak Ridge section of Jefferson, township police said in a statement. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and ventilate the heavy smoke from the building.
The blaze caused heavy fire and smoke damage to the historical landmark, officials said. The structure was unoccupied at the time of the fire.
The Ringling Manor was built by Alfred T. Ringling of the Ringling Brothers Circus. It has 26 rooms and sits on 1,000 acres of property. The mansion took six years to build and construction cost about $500,000, according to the NJ State Library.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Jefferson Township Police Department is asking anyone with information to call Det. Sgt. Michael Ondish at 973-208-6153.
