Senate President Nick Scutari on Friday announced his chief of staff, Jessica Cohen, will serve as executive director of the Senate Majority Office.
Cohen succeeds Tim Lydon, whom Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill tapped to be her chief counsel. She will continue as Scutari’s chief of staff.
“Jess is an exceptionally talented woman who has succeeded in gaining the trust and respect of the members of the Democratic caucus and the public officials and organizations we work with to shape public policies,” Scutari said. “Her experience in government, with non-profit organizations and in the hospital and biotech sectors equips her with insights that will be invaluable as we work to address the needs of the people of New Jersey and move the state forward.”
Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Ruiz congratulated Lydon on his hiring in the governor’s office and said Cohen will do well in the role.
“Jess is a proven leader who has been an integral part of the Democratic caucus’s leadership team, and I have full confidence she will continue to provide exceptional guidance to our members and work well with advocates, the public, and our dedicated staff,” Ruiz said. “Her professional experience, deep understanding of the legislative process, and unwavering commitment to serving the people of New Jersey will ensure our caucus continues to advance policies that strengthen our communities and move our state forward.”
Cohen has previously served as chief of staff for state Sen. Joe Cryan (D-Union Twp) and chief of staff for former state Sen. Ellen Karcher.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to serve the Senate President and the members of the Senate Majority as Executive Director,” Cohen said in the release. “I look forward to building on our policy achievements as we work together to advance legislative priorities that will improve the quality of life for the residents of New Jersey.”
