As if Bruce Springsteen wasn’t busy enough promoting his new movie, he made an appearance in his old Asbury Park stomping grounds this weekend as well.
Fresh off the Thursday release of “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere,” The Boss hopped on stage at iconic concert venue The Stone Pony on Sunday for a benefit hosted by E Street Band member Stevie Van Zandt.
The event was billed as “Little Steven’s Birthday Party at the Pony” and benefited TeachRock, an education initiative bringing music into classrooms.
Springsteen joined Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul (the house band for the event) for three songs — “Raise Your Hand,” “I Don’t Want to Go Home” and “Tenth Avenue Freeze-out.”
Multiple videos of the performance were quickly posted to YouTube.
The benefit was held to celebrate the birthdays of Stevie and Maureen Van Zandt while supporting TeachRock’s mission. The event also included a garage sale featuring music memorabilia, a Halloween t-shirt contest and various performances. Tickets to attend the sold-out event were $350.
Springsteen launched his career performing at The Stone Pony, the beloved beachside venue that opened in 1974. So it’s no surprise the bar was featured throughout “Deliver Me From Nowhere,” the film starring Jeremy Allen White as Springsteen as he records the classic yet controversial album “Nebraska” in his Colts Neck bedroom in 1982.
Surprise performances from Springsteen have become a common occurrence in the Garden State — whether at MetLife Stadium with Zach Bryan or a surprise set at the Light of Day Foundation’s WinterFest in Red Bank.
