The Redbirds (11-6-1) and the Irish are usually locked in an intense battle that gets decided in the final minutes, but Allentown came out and kept the pressure on the ND cage.
“This feels so good,’’ said Allentown coach Kayla Peterson. “The last three games we played them and they have all been decided by one goal. I’m so happy we were able to settle and play our game. The girls were ready for this game and I knew they’d bring it.’’
They did and it was from contributions up and down the lineup.
Ella Sluder, who is headed to UMass-Lowell next season, led the way with three goals and an assist. Sluder now has 25 goals on the season and it was her third hat trick of the season.
Natalie Levine, who scored with 39 seconds left for Allentown in the regular season meeting with the Irish for a 5-4 win, caged a pair and Addison Gingras and Addison Meyers tallied single goals.
It was also a milestone evening for Anna Simonds, the Redbirds goalie, as she eclipsed the 100 save mark.
“We had a talk on Tuesday at practice about wanting to come out with all the intensity we could bring,’’ said Sluder. “This was the most team centered game we have ever played. Our passing was incredible, we had great post balls and our sticks were down when they needed to be. We knew they have grit and intensity and we have to match it head on and keep going.’’
Allentown and it there was a turning point in the game in was in the waning minute of the second period, Notre Dame had a shot that would’ve tied the game hit the post and was cleared.
Then seconds later the Redbirds scored off a corner with no time on the clock for a 3-1 halftime lead.
“We knew they have a lot of speed and I think we ran out of gas,’’ said Notre Dame coach Cheryl Harris. “We had a lot of opportunities. We were frustrated in the circle and they had some good breakaways and it hurt us.’’
Princeton (10-4), which has been a tournament finalist several times, is coming off a season that was very uncharacteristic last year and it was determined to make amends.
“We showed up with the intensity that we needed to for the full game and we fought to the end,’’ said Princeton coach Heather Serverson. “It’s exciting to be back in the finals.’’
The Tigers were led by Cassie Farran with two goals, Sara-Cate Walker and Charlie Flanagan each had a goal and Heidi Johnson and Walker had assists.
“We were all hyped for the win,’’ said Farran. “I got an amazing assist from Heidi (Johnson) and Sara-Cate and it was really a team effort and I just played the final part in it. When it got to 2-1 we were concerned and we knew we had to be the first to every ball.’’
The Tigers jumped on top 2-0 and then PDS (8-4) pulled to 2-1 near the end of the first half. The Panthers kept the pressure on the Tigers cage in the third period, but couldn’t find the backboard.
The stage is set and it’s one team that has a reputation to uphold and another that looking to rekindle that tournament spark.
