PHILADELPHIA — The closing seconds of the Eagles’ 21-17 loss to the Denver Broncos came under scrutiny from fans after a controversial no-call helped decide the game.
Jalen Hurts and the Eagles were desperately pushing to avoid their first loss of the season. With nine seconds left, Philadelphia needed a touchdown from Denver’s 29-yard line. That’s when Hurts targeted tight end Dallas Goedert near the goal-line.
Hurts’ pass to Goedert, who was covered by a pair of defenders, fell incomplete. But there’s a case to be made that Denver’s JL Skinner interfered with Goedert as he went for the catch.
No flag was thrown. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni threw his arms up in frustration, pleading for a call, while fans at Lincoln Financial Field booed the referees mercilessly.
On the next and final play of the game, Hurts’ end-zone heave fell incomplete, and the Eagles moved to 4-1.
Goedert weighed in on the no-call that had Eagles fans fuming.
“Jalen threw it up to me, and they obviously didn’t throw a flag,” Goedert said in the postgame locker room. “Have to go back and see it on tape. But it would have been interesting to see what happened (if they did throw a flag).”
Goedert said he didn’t receive an explanation from the sideline or head referee.
Referee Adrian Hill told a PFWA pool reporter the following when asked about the Goedert no-call: “Our officials saw mutual hand fighting and hand-to-hand combat and did not see action that rose to the level of a foul on that play.”
Goedert was asked if he felt as though he was interfered with in the moment.
“I felt like there was a little bit of contact there. Nothing was called,” Goedert said. “But the game really shouldn’t have even come down to that.”
Goedert is right about that.
The Eagles blew a 14-point second-half lead in the fourth quarter to pick up their first loss of the 2025 season and first defeat since last December. Down 17-3, the Broncos rallied to score 18 unanswered points in the fourth quarter while the Eagles’ offense floundered.
Goedert and the Eagles will try to get back on track with a win when they travel to face the New York Giants on Thursday night at MetLife Stadium.
