Sprout Organics is expanding a recall of its sweet potato, apple and spinach-flavored baby food pouches due to potentially elevated lead levels.
After announcing a recall last week that affected only one lot of the product, the Montvale-based manufacturer reported additional lots of the 3.5-ounce pouches may be impacted, according to a Sept. 23 alert posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
In addition to being sold online, the product was available at Walgreens and independent retailers across 28 states: Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
The recall applies to:
- Lot code 4212 with a best by date of Oct. 29, 2025
- Lot code 4213 with a best by date of Oct. 30, 2025
- Lot code 4282 with a best by date of Dec. 4, 2025
- Lot code 4310 with a best by date of Feb. 4, 2026
According to Sprout Organics, the voluntary recall was initiated after a routine sampling of the product for heavy metals.
To date, no serious adverse effects have been reported and no other Sprout Organics product is affected, the company said.
“Exposure to lead, even at low levels, may increase blood lead levels. Additional signs and symptoms of lead exposure are more likely with acute exposure to higher levels of lead or chronic exposure to lead. The effects of lead depend upon the amount and duration of exposure and age/body weight. If a child is exposed to enough lead for a protracted period of time, this can affect learning and development or cause other long-term health problems,” the FDA noted.
Customers who have purchased the item are being advised to return it to their local store for a full refund. Anyone with questions about the recall can contact 510-833-6089 or [email protected].
