The Gov. Phil Murphy-led economic mission to India continues, and Sept. 22 featured a slew of activity.
Coordinated by Choose New Jersey, the six-day, four-city trip includes government officials, industry and higher education leaders, key stakeholders and others.
Following the signing of two major Memoranda of Understanding to kick off the mission, the momentum continued Monday as Murphy announced seven MOUs between colleges and universities in New Jersey and India.
They include with Indian locales:
- New Jersey Institute of Technology + Manipal Academy of Higher Education – Manipal, Karnataka

“These agreements reflect New Jersey’s leadership in fostering global academic and research partnerships,” said Murphy. “By connecting our top universities with leading institutions in India, we are laying the groundwork for breakthroughs in medicine, technology, and science while creating new opportunities for students and researchers on both sides of the globe.”
Choose New Jersey President and CEO Wesley Mathews noted that the Garden State is home to some of the nation’s top universities – while also serving as a hub for medical and technological innovation.
“These collaborations with Indian institutions reinforce our commitment to driving forward global innovation, while strengthening ties with India, one of New Jersey’s leading partners in research and innovation,” said Mathews.
Expanding tech opportunities
Additionally, the New Jersey Department of State and the State of Karnataka signed a Sister State MOU. The Indian tech hub is known for its thriving startup and innovation ecosystem.
In December, Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way signed a Letter of Intent during her trip to India regarding the initiative. The collaboration aims to drive technological innovation, research and entrepreneurship.
“It is an honor to formalize this sister state agreement with Karnataka, a global leader in innovation and entrepreneurship,” said Way, who also serves as New Jersey Secretary of State. “Having signed the Letter of Intent during my visit to India a few months ago, I am delighted to see this agreement come to light.”

“Karnataka state has long been a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship,” said Secretary to the Government of Karnataka Ekroop Caur. “By partnering with New Jersey, we can expand opportunities for startups, strengthen collaboration in emerging technologies, and create lasting connections between our ecosystems that will drive growth and progress in both regions.”
“New Jersey and Karnataka are both powerhouses of innovation, with thriving technology and life sciences sectors that shape the future of our economies,” said Murphy. “This partnership will create new opportunities for trade, deepen collaboration in technology, and promote innovation, while reinforcing the strong economic and cultural ties between our regions.”
Way added, “This agreement strengthens the bridge between our regions and sets the stage for a future of shared success.”
