Burlington Stores is preparing to unveil its revamped store format in New Jersey.
Scheduled to open Sept. 12 at St. Georges Crossing in Woodbridge and Oct. 10 at Columbia Park Center in North Bergen, the South Jersey-based off-price retailer’s new locations will feature a more streamlined, easier-to-shop layout.
Previously known as Burlington Coat Factory, the chain sells branded apparel, footwear, accessories and home goods at up to 60% off other retailers’ prices. Burlington’s fast-growing footprint of 1,138 stores throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico includes 52 locations in New Jersey.
In order to reach a goal of 500 new stores by the end of 2028, the 53-year-old company is transitioning to a smaller, 25,000-square-foot format to enable more cost-efficient, high-traffic placements in strip centers and urban retail hubs.
According to Burlington, half of its existing stores have already been converted and most remaining locations are expected to feature to the new format by the end of 2026.
Taking over
The chain is also pursuing strategic retail acquisitions of retail properties formerly occupied by bankrupt brands, like Joann and Bed Bath & Beyond.
At Madison International Realty-owned Columbia Park Center, Burlington takes over space previously occupied by defunct discount chain Big Lots. Additional tenants at the John F. Kennedy Boulevard property include Five Below, Carter’s, Gap Factory, Dollar Power, Old Navy, OshKosh B’Gosh, ShopRite, Labcorp, Pizza Hut, The UPS Store and T-Mobile.
In Woodbridge, Burlington is moving into a former P.C. Richard & Sons at St. Georges Crossing, according to Levin Management Corp., the property’s leasing and managing agent. It will join a tenant mix that includes ShopRite, T.J. Maxx, PetSmart, Ulta Beauty, Nothing Bundt Cakes, European Wax Center, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Taco Bell, Jersey Mike’s Subs and Kpot Korean BBQ & Hot Pot.
